A Sight for Forgetful Eyes - Ryan Homes Build

I had a weekend-day off and as a family we had nothing planned - finally! So as a spur of the moment thing, we drove to Maryland to visit the Ernest Hemingway model. I did not realize this model existed until reading through Brandon's blog [building with Ryan Homes - Park Place] about the journey of building an Ernest Hemingway alongside his wife. Literally the only blog that I can find in regards to an Ernest Hemingway model. Where are you EH builders?! :)

Anyway, it was refreshing to see because it's been a few months since we've seen the home. The other EH model in Charlottesville is honestly almost the same. They are different elevations with the one having a half porch versus a full porch, also one has an attached garage (no bonus room) and the other a detached.

The front entrance to the model was locked, so we walked around back and went in the back door that led directly to the kitchen. Directly is an understatement because I about walked right into the bar extending from the kitchen. If there is no dinette/morning room, there is what seems to be a foot in between the door and the bar.

It was awesome to see the double ovens in person. I was a bit skeptical about how they would look because I assumed the area would just feel so cramped losing the extra counter space. Completely opposite. I am excited we went with the double ovens now.

I fell in love with this dining room. I have two very different ideas floating in my head now. I am literally not going to know what to do until I am in my own space. Originally, I was thinking of doing a beadboard type dining room which we have seen in another model and it was incredibly stunning. But after seeing this model, it was so light and airy and just the most perfect shade of blue that I fell in love. Very tastefully done! We got the level 2 trim specifically for the fact that I did not want the wainscoting because we would remove it to apply the board and batten.. I have been second guessing myself since signing for the level 2, thinking of the level 3. Although, I know all the extra trim is very easily completed as a DIY, also.

It was extremely difficult to get a picture to do the Master shower justice. This is specifically the bathroom that we will be getting with the 4-bedroom layout with the shower only feature in the Master. We did request the shower pan be tiled which did get approved and I cannot wait to see that! The bathroom does appear as a hall in a sense - when you walk in the bathroom the closet is on the left and the double sinks on the right. When you walk through to the "next section" the shower is on the left and the toilet on the right. The window you see in the shower is just a reflection, as it is actually a square window located between the shower and the toilet. When we go to our pre-construction meeting we are going to request that the drywall that separates the shower/toilet combo from the closet/sinks be either raised or changed into an arch, because it really makes the room feel crowded. I'd like to take the most advantage of the 9ft ceilings as possible. The other bathroom pictured is the hall bath. I'm really crossing my fingers that the tile in the shower goes above the shower head.

We took a different way home so that we could stop by the model that mimics our kitchen cabinets, granite, and flooring. It was so refreshing to see as well!

There is no way to do the flooring adequate justice in pictures. I can not for the life of me determine the true color of it. Misty Gray is such a misleading color name, because there are hues of black and brown in addition to the gray.. and I LOVE it! It also appears so different in certain shades of lighting.

We have kind of put to the side the fact that we chose the metal balusters until we saw them in person again. Another exciting feature that I look forward to seeing in my own home. Our stairs will be wooden and stained to match the hardwood throughout the first floor with white baseplates. Another unknown of what it will look like in person, but I can't wait! :)

We continue on with the waiting game while the crew finishing laying the plumbing/sewer and road for the development and then, with fingers crossed, we will have our pre-construction meeting! I'm sure it will be mid-August. Simply enough, I will just continue to be patient because it is going to be so rewarding in the end. We cannot be grateful enough for what the future holds! :)

  1. I just love "our" kitchen... Lol! I can not wait to see it come together. Do you have any zoomed in for what they did for a backsplash? I think I want to do subway tile but I'm stuck... So always open for ideas!

Our "non communicating" SR told us she would call us shortly with our pre con meeting date. We are still waiting of course... So hopefully it will be soon.

That first model would have sold me a house. What a gorgeous dining room. Just decorated perfectly...

Here's to hoping we both break ground shortly!

    1. At this rate you will be the one showing me pictures of our kitchen first.. ;) but maybe we will be tied! Haha.. let me go through some of the pictures I have from this time and last and see if I can find anything that shows the backsplash any better. It's really just a white/gray marble subway tile. It really is beaitufl in person. We want subway tile in ours also.. we can both do the same thing and continue being kitchen twins! ;) Fingers crossed! I hope that you get your date soon!! We stopped by our site again tonight.. looks like they are putting in the fire hydrant plumbing, so maybe we will be one step closer to asphalt! ;)

  2. Oh my gosh. Thanks for posting pictures! I love the misty gray flooring! It's so good to see it on a model home. I had to trust my decision and think outside the box. I'm just putting misty gray on my foyer, kitchen, and morning room. I wish we did it all over the first floor... GAH. The whole model home is gorgeous with the white cabinets. Makes me rethink my decision... haha.

    1. Yes! I just had to see the misty gray flooring in person again, Kimmie. It was so hard to remember what it looked like. But even taking pictures of it, does not capture how pretty it is and how much it can change in person. I love that you thought outside the box.. that's what we tried to do too. And no worries, it will be beautiful! I believe that. :) I cannot wait to see your final kitchen come together.. I know it's going to be so beautiful with the dark cabinets and santa cecelia! Yours makes me question mine! ;) <3

    1. Cheers to white cabinets! :) I'm pretty excited/nervous to see how they look because we haven't seen our style home with white cabinets! I was so apprehensive about the flooring until I went back and saw it in person again this past weekend. Definitely feeling much better.. and thank you! I figure the shoes add a little something to look at instead of just lines of wood! Haha!

  5. Thanks so much for your pictures of the Maryland model. We only visited the Charlottesville model so it's nice to see another model. We also asked to have the master shower floor tiled instead of a shower pan, it was a must for us. We wish they had a model with master bath we picked to get the feel of the layout.

    1. The Maryland model was so similar yet different from the Charlottesville model. And with this being such a newer model home it's so hard to find any models or pictures or anything on lol! I agree, you HAVE to have the shower floor tiled.. it makes such a HUGE difference and I'm so excited to see it. We are getting closer Page! :)

  8. Hi. I'm wondering where the model home is with the white cabinets? It looks beautiful and I'd love to see it in person. I'm in Baltimore and am considering building the Ferncliff model with Ryan Homes.

    1. Hey Becky! I'm so sorry of taking awhile to get back to you. My fault. But that model home is in Stafford in the Southgate community - the Fox Chapel model home. It's not too hard to get to by taking Route 1. I hope you are able to see it! :) Good luck!

  9. I am in love with the misty grey floor. We were told about this color at our flooring mtg last week. But we chose Rushmore Hazlenut Glaze cabinets and New Venetian Gold granite. So we picked American Scrape Great Plains hardwood. Now I'm soooo confused seeing your blog. It looks great with a white/black/grey theme. I think our colors are more antique white/brown/creams. Help!!! Lol

    1. Misty grey is definitely a beautiful, yet difficult to idealize-in-your-home flooring. So much of me loved the antique/creamy look with brown flooring. It really was what I originally wanted for the home because it is just incredibly stunning in person. But for some reason we chose the non-traditional look. Some of me is still apprehensive about the look because it is more modern and different and again I LOVE the hazelnut cabinets with NVG or SCL granite. Only time will tell because I can't turn back now! :)

  10. Thank you so much for posting these pics of the grey mist-sonoma white-new caledonia combo! My wife and I are also purchasing a Ryan home in NOVA and ended up choosing the exact same combination for our kitchen.

    1. I bet your home is going to be beautiful! I still have a sweet spot in my heart for the new caledonia granite even though we switched. And yay for building in NoVA! :) Good luck!

  12. Hi... we are purchasing a ryan home in the Nova region as well and have chosen the same hardwood -cabinet-granite combination. It was a relief to see these pictures.... the whole outcome is really modern and exciting. We cook a lot and have been concerned about the about the maintainability of the white cabinets. Anyone here who's had experience with the sonoma white cabinets?are they easily cleanable?we are still thinking if we should keep the combination or go with the maple espresso cabinets instead. Please advice... this is such a perfect place to discuss my concerns since everyone here is pretty much in the same phase as us.i am really looking forward to hear from you guys.
