Decor Deals - Joann Fabrics & Kohl's

I love a good deal. That's all I can say.. and it seems that 4th of July sales are almost always the best ones around. We still have quite a few months before we have the chance to see our home built and go to closing, so the best I can do is shop now. At least I will be prepared to decorate when we do close, because after closing? We will officially be broke paying a brand new mortgage. ;)
As Marissa from A Rome of Our Own wrote, "We have 6 ceiling fan pre-wires, and six months until move in, so we're planning on purchasing a ceiling fan a month so they will be all ready to go when the house is ours."
I LOVE this idea. We have a list of things that we need and are going to start by attempting to purchase them the way that Marissa mentioned. It seems like logical sense, but is also so hard to commit to a "design" when we don't really know what the feel of the house will be. Is that weird? Maybe so..

Last week, I got a great deal on some decor from Joann's when I began searching their site. At least 1-2x per week, I get an email for 40-50% off a regularly priced item. I think that is an awesome deal. But this coupon aside, they are currently having 70% off their Summer items. Online you can also find the code for either 15% off total purchase or free shipping. My biggest disappointment? The clock turned out to have a green casing when I received it, instead of what appears to me, grey. Nonetheless, I still love it! The blue tray is adorable and is just the kind of tray I had been looking for, so the price couldn't be beat. And the American pride decor? I have plans for decorating our mantle each holiday season. I think the freedom sign will go perfectly with the metal star painted with the American flag that I've had hidden away for over a year. Cheers!

And by no means am I writing this post on behalf of Joann for compensation. I just like passing on a GREAT deal! :) We also found two clearance mirrors at Kohls last weekend when looking for a bridal shower gift for a friend. We are going to attempt to switch out the standard RH mirrors in each of the bathrooms. The ones that we picked up were too good to pass up and will go in our master bath. They definitely have their share of scratches, but it adds to their character (or I'm defending them?). In person they appear to almost be black, while the ones I found online that are the same style/price are gray. Should I switch the "black" ones I have for the grey ones online? I'm really going to have to think about that one..

$100 on sale for $40 (plus earn Kohl's cash)
I don't even know if I should be questioning it. I love this gray look.. I will probably be exchanging the ones that I have. I don't really shop at Kohl's very much, but I think I may start doing so. Especially now that I have earned some Kohl's cash & have a gift card from Kohl's that I won during Nurses Week this year. When I do stop by, I head straight to their clearance section. Another mans trash is another mans treasure! :) I've acquired great pictures and picture frames from them in the past. So, anyway, it is baby steps at this point when it comes to acquiring home goods.

Any one have any good recommendations for places to ship online? I know of Wayfair and Joss & Main online. I'd love to be introduced to other great shops. :)

  1. I've had some luck with overstock, got really good deals for dinning room chairs! They seem to have some pretty nice stuff too and it's mainly all at a discount!

    1. Ahhhh! I forgot about overstock. Thanks Ashley! I really do want some new dining room chairs, too... so I'll have to take a look!

  2. I love Kohls! When the 30% off and kohls cash time comes it's my favorite time of the year! I love the entire Vera Wang home line and I'm pretty sure the bedding for the new house will come from there.

As for decor I am trying to wait until we solidify the furniture we want. I'm in love with a budget busting pottery barn table but I am trying to find a realistic substitute before I commit to that kind of purchase... We literally need an entire house of furniture so we have been shopping around.

I love Joanne as well. I'm torn between sewing our drapes for the first floor or buying them, so I've been in there a ton. I know what color we want to paint now if everything else would just fall into place!

A trick with Joss and Main... Google the name of the piece that you are interested in. There was a couch I wanted that was $1000 on J&M. I googled it and turns out it was from a local furniture distributor who had the exact couch for $580! Also, J&M has a delivery upcharge of $120+ for bigger items. That usually blows the deal for me. As far as wall hangings and pillows they seem to be in line with local stores. I tend to use them for "ideas" then look elsewhere!

Did you guys get a break ground date? We are "tentative" August 11th. I have a feeling we will be bumped up because our final deposit wasn't due until the 19th and we are going to drop it off Monday... So hopefully that starts it up sooner!

    Happy 4th!

    1. I'm gonna have to keep an eye out for those deals at Kohl's. Too good! I need to find bedding as well. We want to get a new bed and I say that calls for new bedding lol ;)

Seriously the hardest part is finding what will work as far as style in the house. I'm not sure our couches are really gonna work in our new house but I think they will have to work for now. Maybe next 4th of July we will find a great furniture sale. ;) I would LOVE to have an unlimited fund at pottery barn. I think I'd be in heaven.

I was really thinking about teaching myself to sew and doing my own drapes. Such a simple thing to do that I think would save so much money and be customized, you know? Definitely a great idea! I'm sure you could find a lot of information on Pinterest for patterns. :)

I've honestly never bought from Joss & Main.. the prices are pretty steep. I'll definitely keep in mind that I should look around because that's a KILLER deal on the couch you mentioned.

We have no "tentative" date yet, but I'm honestly thinking we probably are on the same time frame. Right now it looks like they could be putting roads down any day but I also am not a construction expert. ;) No word from our SR and my husbands been in contact with him. It's all right though... I'm trying to enjoy this season and be patient! :) fingers crossed you all start soon!!! It will be SO exciting.

Happy 4th to you as well!

  3. Looks like we have a similar time frame for our new homes! I hate waiting so I'm just shopping to distract myself haha! I love all of your stuff!! Cute stuff + a great deal?? Perfect! I agree with Ashley about Overstock.com. They have some good deals sometimes. Michaels also has some pretty good deals. You can almost always find a 40% off off of one item coupon on their website. If you like to refinish furniture then Habitat for Humanity re-stores are awesome (Here's the link so you can find one near you - http://habitatncc.org/restore/) ! A lot of the stuff there is made well but just needs some lovin and some fresh paint and/or stain.

    1. Glad we are on the same time frame! Sometimes I think I'm the only one who has to keep waiting! :) But it will be all the more sweeter in the end.

I'm definitely going to be checking out overstock. Do they ever do coupons on top if the already discounted price? I've never bought from them but I'll have to keep an eye out. :)

I'll also have to sign back up for Michaels emails. There was a point where I got rid of all of my emails from places I liked to shop because I had nothing to shop for. But now is the time!!

I'll look it up but I think we have a habitat for humanity in the town where I work and I always wondered what it was! You got some great stuff from there. I'm guessing it's like Salvation Army? But I'm definitely willing to get my hands dirty on some DIY! :) happy 4th!

  4. Another great place is Kirklands. I actually found it from another blogger and was driving through Lancaster outlets and poof, there was a brick and mortar store too! Not sure where you are, but the online store is great but the store is SO much fun. And agree with all others about overstock- have always received good quality from there!

  5. We changed out our mirrors from the ones RH provided. In the Powder Room and Guest Bathroom... this was easy (the Powder Room just lifts off the anchor, and the Guest Bath just slides to the left over the sink) but the Master Bathroom was slightly more complicated. The top clips actually slide up to allow you to pull the mirror off of the wall, but it's really tight on either side because of the walls.

Needless to say, we found a mirror that fits perfectly at Kirklands (which another blogger mentioned) so if you have one around, I'd definitely check it out!

    1. Thanks for the tip! I am nervous about removing the master bath mirror because it is just a tight fitting space. But I'm telling you, I really need to go see what this Kirklands is all about! :)
